Literary Love
I’m burned out. I’ve got my hands in too many projects. I’ve still made time for reading, but nothing has really inspired me this month. I feel uninspirable. My autocorrect just tried to change the word ‘uninspirable’ to ‘uninsurable’. No, wait, I read TRANSMETROPOLITAN by Warren Ellis. Good comic book. And, I read an interview with Lars Von Trier in this month’s SIGHT & SOUND. "Sig Bjorkman: What was the motivation for the bare-studio approach to shooting DOGVILLE? Lars von Trier: The most reactionary view of art is expressed by the question ‘What is art?’ followed by the statement ‘This is not art!’ Critics have tried to cordon and limit film and literature, which is what I’m challenging by creating a fusion between film, theatre and literature. It’s important not to submit to such questions as what is or is not filmic because we’ve arrived at a position where everything is possible." Thanks Lars. That was inspiring. I read ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND by Charlie Kaufman. Great script. I hope the film does it justice. I think it will, from the previews it looks like Jim Carrey is nailing the character. We’ll see. Check out Charlie Kaufman’s website to download his scripts: I read THE COOLER by Frank Hannah & Wayne Kramer. Truthfully, I read half of it and put it down because it was TOO good and wanted to see the film before reading the rest of it. I guess I’m getting back to film mode. That doesn’t mean I’ll stop the literary…my mind is just bracing for a change of medium. I wrote a five minute screenplay called MENACING MAN last month. We performed the screenplay as a comedy troupe and the laughs came at the right places. We’ll do it a few more times and I’ll tape it to see what timing is working. Should be fun. That’s what I’m obsessing over now. Has Literary Love become something of a Livejournal? Only this month. Don’t worry. I’m hoping to get a literary erection next month, it’s just, well, I’ve been under a lot of stress honey, I swear this is the first time it has happened, maybe we can just cuddle? Here’s a couple of books I haven’t mentioned in the last few years…..and that I haven’t read for a while, but deserve mention: "I'd Rather You Lied": Selected Poems
1980-1998 I hope to have 1/5 of the soul of Billy. He’s an inspiration to punk rock and literature…and his #1 love, painting. More Billy info @ Impro: Improvisation and the Theatre Some years back I took Improv acting workshops at Bay Area Theatre Sports. They teach the Johnstone method to improv. The classes and this book changed my perception of creativity and art. Maldoror A sick French bastard from the mid 1800’s. Makes Marquis de Sade read like a romance novel. May you be inspired everyday. Literary love, |
