The Royal Family
by William T. Vollmann

I have a fascination with William's writing.  The way he documents the experience of a life of drugs and prostitution is unprecedented.  He gives soul to his characters and his writing has a lot of heart.  At some points during my read of this novel, I felt icky, like when I read Naked Lunch.

The majority of the novel takes place in the Tenderloin of San Francisco.  It was great for me b/c I know a lot of the places he was talking about....and for people not familiar with this district, it's a great education.

Another note....I'm a slow reader and this 774 page novel took me 9 days to read.  Probably a record for me on that large of a novel.

Other works by William T. Vollmann:

The Rainbow Stories
Butterfly Stories
Whores for Gloria
Thirteen Stories and Thirteen Epitaphs
