Dan Fante - July 2005

FOR A

There are these little deaths
in the middle
of you
and me

Like the time just after we stop kissing
or when - today - for a moment - I looked away
and clumsily abandoned
the blueness in your Seal Beach eyes
or
moved my hand from your knee to scratch my face
and was instantly terrorized by the thought of maybe
not seeing you - till - JESUS CHRIST -Wednesday!

These crazy crazy little deaths - that - like a kid
I want to stop and snatch back
immediately
but can't have

All this - a swamp of feelings - is strange
upsetting
and new
it is as if I am having my soul drained...carried away
almost against my will

Yet here - an hour later - pen on paper
I relive our little deaths
and find that all I want
could ever hope for - God -
is
more gasoline
and
more matches
and the amazing touch
of
you
